TVSP - Varieties
Improved varieties
Variety selection: in three years time, in the TVSP project around 400 varieties from all over the world were tested for acceptance by the farmers and market. Of these 400, 20 were introduced and 10 are selected for local seeds production. Some of these selected varieties are local vegetables. Only varieties performing better than existing ones were brought on the market.
New varieties created
Newly introduced OP varieties from East-West are for example carrot Chike, lettuce Rapido, beetroot Jhelum and others.
Newly introduced hybrid varieties from East-West are: okra Lara F1, tomato Kartik F1, pumpkin Sonia F1 and others.
Selection work
Selection work of local vegetables took some more time. We expect to introduce new improved varieties of nightshade, African eggplant and Ethiopian kale in 2008.
