Research

The breeding projects of Rijk Zwaan Afrisem are supported by the research labs of Rijk Zwaan and East West Seed Co. Supported by state of the art techniques our breeders can develop new varieties faster and more efficiently. Research encompasses marker assisted breeding, seed technology research to make further improvements to the seed quality of our varieties and phytopathology research to develop resistance tests.

Phytopathology
Host plant resistance is a major focus for our breeding in Afrisem. The phytopathology departments of East West and Rijk Zwaan support the Afrisem breeders by developing new test protocols and carrying out resistance tests.

Seed technology
We develop many types of tests and techniques to assure and improve the quality of our seeds. Important fields of activity in this respect are, production research, and post-harvest treatments such as cleaning, grading, priming  and coating of seeds.

Molecular biology
We are gaining an ever-greater insight into the molecular composition of plants. Thanks to marker technology, important genetic differences between plants can be made visible at the DNA level. Marker assisted breeding is a very valuable tool for our breeders.

Biochemistry
One of our research groups specializes in determining phytochemicals in plants, i.e. chemicals which are responsible for taste and flavour or may contain vitamins, minerals or other health-enhancing benefits.

We also collaborate extensively with universities and research institutes.
