African kale

African kale (Brassica olecea) is well known under the name Sukuma wiki in East Africa.

African kale is a non-heading cabbage. Individual leaves are harvested on a weekly basis and leaves are bunched to be sold.

Currently the varieties grown are OP’s which often are very un-uniform. We develop hybrid varieties in African kale with superior yield and leaf characteristics. The breeding program is executed in close cooperation with a breeder in Zimbabwe.

The first Afrisem African kale varieties are expected to become commercially available by 2015.
